Thailand: Give an opportunity for abused, abandoned and trafficked children

Details Images

Overview:

Travel from the modern metropolis of Bangkok into the heartland of Thailand – the central plains of Isan (Northeast Thailand). Here you can witness the natural, historical and cultural diversity of this country while assisting a community group providing a safe haven and new ‘opportunity’ for children at risk.
sightseeing choices – Royal Palace, Emerald Buddha, Reclining Buddha, upland hilltribe villages, elephant rides, rafting and more

Volunteer tasks – assist a local organization in its efforts to build a refuge for children at risk including construction work, tree planting, teaching English, etc.

In 2007 there were 1.5 million reported cases of abuse of children in Thailand. In recent months almost half of the rape and abuse cases reported by one provincial hospital alone were girls under the age of 15 years.

To combat this, the Thai government has improved child protection laws and has strained limited government resources to address the increasing need for social services for abused and abandoned children. These efforts are helping but there is still a great need for private foundations to supplement the government programs. There are few organizations in Thailand, or anywhere in Asia, with professional staff and facilities to care for children who are victims of family, community or trafficking abuse.

Buriram Province, where our volunteer project is located, and its neighbouring provinces are primary sources of trafficked children and women, and domestic violence and child abuse are common. Buriram is also strategically located only sixty kilometres from Cambodia, a country where many children and women are trafficked to neighbouring countries and further abroad.

Your participation in this programme will provided urgently needed funding and emotional support for our community partners working hard to make a significant difference in the lives of children!

We are seeking participating schools, university and community-service groups to fund and build housing for children rescued from abuse, abandonment and trafficking. This project is in partnership with Opportunity Foundation under the supervision of the Thai Ministry of Social Services. As each house costs approximately two million Thai Baht ($60,000 USD) all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Due to the sensitive nature of the care for these children interaction will be closely supervised by the foundation’s professional staff.
