Cambodia has been at the center of war, oppression and desperate poverty for three decades, and is still recovering from the genocide of the Pol Pot regime and the bloody civil war that followed. An estimated 1.7 million people died from execution, forced hardships, and starvation during this time.
Cambodians are among the poorest people in the world with per capita annual incomes of under US $300. 4 of the population is living on less than $1 per day. Approximately 85% of Cambodia’s population lives in rura areas where access to basic services is almost non-existent. Corruption in Cambodia is endemic, with every level of bureaucracy including teachers accepting or expecting bribes for their services.
The status of education in Cambodia is the below:
• A shortage of schools and classrooms, particularly in rural areas limits children’s access to basic education (access to lower secondary and upper secondary is dismal)
• Overwhelmingly, poverty forces children to forgo schooling to support their families (The poverty line in Cambodia is set at US$0.25 per person daily consumption for individuals in rural areas in Cambodia. A staggering 53.7% of Siem Reaps population live below this line. As a result familie often cannot afford to send their children to school as they rely on them to contribute to the famil income.).
• Additionally, low wages forces teachers to collect informal school fees from students that creates barrier to education for poor children (public school teachers earn US$30-$50/month). Every child has the right to education. Education enables children to develop the essential skills needed to make positive changes in their lives, and break free from poverty. Without an education, a child is immediate disadvantaged and far less likely to achieve their true potential.
